Frequently
Asked Questions:
Why did I receive a letter from United
Way and from an agency?
United Way attempts to thank every donor with a letter. In addition,
we ask that agencies also thank donors who designated their contributions
to them. (Some agencies are so small that they may not have enough man
power to do this, however.)
Why did my letter thank me for my pledge when I paid cash?
We use the word “pledge” for all contributions even those that are already
paid. Sometimes people will leave a job, and that pledge won’t be paid,
or a check might bounce.
Is my donation tax deductible?
United Way is a 501c (3) non-profit, so all donations are tax deductible.
Pay check stubs and cancelled checks can be used for tax purposes, and
contributions over $250 also receive individual tax letters.
Why should I give to United Way rather than directly to the
agency I pick?
I never discourage people from giving to our agencies. Giving collectively
can increase donations though. Some times companies will match employee
gifts. Also, giving through United Way lets the agencies know exactly
how much money is coming and when. Not only can the agency budget more
effectively, it also can use our promise of funds as a match and apply
for large grants. In addition, our Citizen Review Teams and board members
visit each agency. We may know about agencies and needs in cases where
you don’t.
Will my money go out of the area?
Only if you designate it for another United Way. We give funds to help
Franklin County residents. Sometimes a Roanoke or Martinsville agency
will offer services to our residents when we don’t have an agency like
that here. In those cases, we’ll give funds so our folks can receive
services too.
Does United Way use my money for dinners and a large staff?
When United Way has some type of special event, we always find sponsors,
so no donated dollars will be used. United Way of Franklin County has
only one employee. We work hard to earn your trust and to see that these
donated dollars are spent in ways that will help the most people. Thank
you for your support!
