The Franklin Society
The Society was named, as was Franklin County itself, in honor of Benjamin
Franklin, a leader of our nation, publisher, scientist, inventor, and
philosopher. In 1735, the Pennsylvania Gazette, one of America’s foremost
newspapers of the day, published Franklin’s “Formula for Successful
Living,” in which he expressed the only constant and durable source
of happiness is in acts of humanity, friendship, generosity and benevolence.
Franklin’s life demonstrated his unquenchable desire to do good and
to pursue the betterment of human existence. He once wrote to his mother,
“So the years roll round, and the last will come, when I would rather
have it said, ‘He lived usefully,’ than ‘He died rich.’”
The Franklin Society offers the opportunity for individuals in Franklin
County to rise above ordinary levels of giving to meet the difficult
challenges facing our community. The Franklin Society is an opportunity
to fulfill the commitment of the United Way of Franklin County – to
build a better community. Society members understand the need to support
those agencies striving to meet the human service needs within Franklin
County. Through an enhanced level of contribution, members of the Society
exhibit today those virtues of which Benjamin Franklin spoke in the
1700’s.
As the United Way of Franklin County continues to grow, we hope that
much of that growth comes from the membership of the Franklin Society.
